The Doone Run, Exmoor and North Devon Walking Festival and the Exmoor Perambulation are annual events to keep you fit and healthy in a glorious part of England.
Exmoor is one of England’s most stunning areas and what better way to cover some of the ground than taking part in one of the several events of walking and running held in the area each year. Here are three of the annual events that anyone can take part in from a thrity-one mile stroll to a tough and steep distance running race. The 25th Denes DooneThe Doone Run is one of the most enduring runs in the UK, established 25 years ago just a few years after the first London Marathon. This year, the silver anniversary race takes place on 21 September. The Doone Run follows 10 miles of some stunning scenery, from wooded river valleys and cliff tops. The route runs from sea level and climbs to nearly 1000ft. This year it starts in Lynmouth on the Manor Grounds. Closing date for postal entries is September 15, 2008. Start & Finish Manor grounds, Lynmouth Entry limit – 350 people There’s also a kids fun run. The North Devon and Exmoor Walking FestivalThe festival follows a route through some varied countryside including the only International Biosphere Reserve in England. It also covers a Heritage Coast and Marine Nature Reserve and an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). Then there is Exmoor National Park and with vistas of of Lundy Island just off the coast. Each route has been chosen to show off the local countryside and timed for a marvellous display of wild flowers. This next year the festival is covering all Exmoor and North Devon down to the Cornish border. The 2009 festival will be held from Thursday 30th April to Friday 8th May. For more information. Exmoor PerambulationAbout twenty years ago the Exmoor Youth Association revived the Exmoor Perambulation a tradition that had ceased decades before. This event now takes place annually in mid-June. During the 31 mile route of cross county walking you will be taking in breathtaking views and crossing parts of the National Park which are not normally open to the public. You will also be participating in history as the Perambulation dates back over 725 years! The weather as always is a factor on Exmoor which makes this one most challenging of walks in the area. The next Perambulation will be held on the 20th June 2009. For full details on this and other Exmoor events and how to subscribe visit the Exmoor website.
