Leeds Running Events During 2009

Run for Charity and Health in a Full Calendar of Road Races

Dec 30, 2008 Marc Latham

If the end of 2008 festivities have got you thinking about running there is a full calendar of races in the Leeds area for 2009. Here are some details.

There has been a heightened interest in Leeds running events since charity fundraiser Jane Tomlinson's endurance efforts captured the city and world's attention. This article provides information on some of the runs taking place in 2009.

South Leeds 5 Mile Race and 5km Fun Run

This event is in aid of the Barnados charity, and takes place at the South Leeds Stadium on March 22nd. There is more information on this event from the calendar link at the bottom of the page.

Leeds half-marathon

The 2009 Leeds half-marathon will take place on May 10th, and it is open to applications until April 10th.

The race starts and finishes near Millenium Square, in the city centre. The course then passes the wooded Woodhouse Ridge, before the only steep hill on the course leads out to the northern ring road.

The ring road runs alongside the Hollies forest, and soon after passing that the return leg of the run begins.

There is online application for the Leeds half-marathon information available here.

Leeds Run For All

The 2009 Leeds Run For All 10km race will take place on June 21st, and is now open to applications.

The race sold out months before the event last year, so this year the maximum amount of people has been raised to 15,000.

The race was initiated by Jane Tomlinson in 2007, as she took part in many endurance events while battling cancer.

The race helped raise £750,000 for charity last year, and it is hoped that over £1,000,000 will be raised this year.

The course is similar to the first half of the half-marathon, and the turnaround is below the Woodhouse Ridge wood.

Leeds Tree-Athlon

Tree-athlon races took place in Leeds, London and Manchester during 2008.

The three parts to the race are a 5km run, making an urban tree wish and planting a sapling.

The 2009 Leeds Tree-Athlon will start at midday on Sunday September 27th, and will take place in Temple Newsam park again.

Eccup 10 and Abbey Dash

Two of the highest profile races around Leeds don't have dates for 2009 at this time.

The Eccup 10, which follows a scenic course adjacent to the Eccup Reservoir, took place in July of 2008, so it is likely to be during that month in 2009.

The Abbey Dash, which has been voted one of the best races in the UK, took place in November during 2008, and the 2009 event is likely to take place in the same month.

The Dash has a flat fast course, and the half way point is in the grounds of Kirkstall Abbey. These are some of the reasons why it has been voted one of the top races in the country by Runner's World magazine.
